What Are The Symptoms of ROSACEA?

Rosacea is defined as a chronic dermatitis of the face, especially of the nose and cheeks, characterized by a red or rosy coloration, caused by dilation of capillaries, and the appearance of acne-like pimples (also known as Acne Rosacea). It can often involve the eye area (Ocular Rosacea).

Rosacea is a skin disorder affecting millions of people, mostly older adults in the 30-60 age range.
  • It primarily affects people with fair skin and can be inherited.
  • Early stage Rosacea can bring facial flushing and redness and tends to occur mostly on the face; sometimes on the neck and upper chest area.
  • Some people experience frequent swelling which may become permanent.
  • Inflammatory Rosacea has the appearance of pimples and bumps on the face; and may involve small blood vessels under the skin.
  • Rhinophyma is a Rosacea condition mostly experienced by men where the nose becomes enlarged with red thick bumps.
The Symptoms:
  • With Rosacea, the entire face may have a rosy appearance.
  • Some Rosacea sufferers may have an enlarged nose and inflammatory red bumps.
  • Commonly with Rosacea there is a tendency to flush easily and the skin may have a burning feeling.
  • The flare-ups can be made worse by heat, sunlight, hot drinks, spicy or hot foods and alcohol.
  • Those affected by Ocular Rosacea (eyes) may also experience burning and a red swelling of the eyelids.
  • It is common to have delicate skin with Rosacea and therefore, it is important to avoid the use of facial products that can irritate and dry the skin further.
  • Sun damage can produce flare-ups therefore using a daily sunscreen is recommended for Rosacea sufferers to protect them from this damage.
